Another vignette I wrote for the Halloween Enchantment Festival of 2014. It’s the story of the Night Weaver.

(Night Weaver stands at a big loom with long drapes of black cloth.)

1 What a busy time of year it is

for me, the night-time weaver!

I need to make long yards of cloth

to fill those orders without pause

and starting to run a fever!

2 As days grow short, the nights grow long,

and so do my assignments

to weave dark cloaks of winter night

in due farewell to long day’s light

and summer’s wild excitement.

3 To make the cloak I use black yarn,

and I use lots of it!

It slows down time and closes eyes,

it quiets nerves and simplifies.

It is the perfect fit!

4 I also weave some golden threads

into the darkness’ covers.

Look here, those are the night-time dreams

of children, bear, and fish in streams,

of beetles, birds and lovers.

5 And then I have some moonstone here

and other sparkling glitter.

These are the stars so clear and bright

that break up darkness with their light

and dazzling silver flicker.

6 I weave all this with steady hand

into long cloaks of darkness.

Once done, I spread it, swift and sure,

across the wide earth to secure

your restful sleep and smartness.

7 But back to work! The sun won’t wait

to set and to retire.

Here, take a golden dream with you

for nights to come and to renew

your playfulness and fire.
